I am struggling to understand the hostility of many Keswick residents to visitors and those who own second homes in the locality returning.
From the “Keswick is still closed” notices to the article in your paper where the Lake District National Park Authority is urging Keswick residents to “shop” second home owners using their properties to the police, the language against visitors and second home owners is hostile and unacceptable.
I appreciate that caution must prevail with the continued threat of Covid 19. Second home owners are able to isolate and social distance from others within their homes far more effectively and safely than visitors to the Keswick market. The webcam footage of the market place showed that social distancing of 2 metres was ineffective. Listening to local news reports and reading your paper, it feels like there is a real appetite to delay the return of second home owners and tourists way beyond what is reasonable.
As far as I am aware the residents of Keswick do not actually own Keswick (it is there for everybody to enjoy) and I would be surprised if they spend anywhere near the sums that tourists and second home owners do within the town. We are keen to return and enjoy the magnificent scenery that is the Lake District but it does feel that we are at best tolerated and in many cases are clearly not welcome.
