We were delighted to see that at long last there was to be a one way system
for the roads around the ‘pinch point’ at what is still thought of as
Dixon’s Corner (Station Street/St John’s Street)
However, delight turned to dismay on reading that the intention is to
direct traffic FROM Penrith Road TO St. John’s Street. Surely it would be
far, far better to direct traffic in the opposite direction, especially
considering the existing one-way direction on part of Southey Street? As a
simple example, vehicles coming from the medical centre (off Ambleside Road)
will be forced either to negotiate the tortuous route through to Eskin
Street and Greta Street, or to divert around the lengthy ‘recommended’ route
to Toll Bar (top of Manor Brow) and the A591, with the added contribution to
carbon dioxide emission.
Furthermore, the report on the Keswick Reminder website implied that the
one way direction could not be implemented until pavements had been widened.
This again makes no sort of sense, unless the road was temporarily closed
completely there would be chaos if widening work was carried out whilst
two-way traffic was still allowed to flow.
We would urge the powers-that-be to rethink the details of this otherwise
